American Express Delta Gold Card

Delta SkyMiles Gold American Express Card: Is It Worth It?

If you fly Delta even a few times a year, the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card is one of those cards worth taking a closer look at. The card currently has a$0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $150 per year.

IMPORTANT: Remember, the American Express Co-Branded cards work the same as the regular American Express cards; you need to start at the bottom and work your way up through the card family, or you can accidentally block yourself from a future sign-up bonus. Start with the Delta Gold, then move to the Delta Platinum, and end with the Delta Reserve.  If you start with the Delta Reserve card, you can still get the cards below it just will potentially qualify for the sign-up bonuses. They are once in a lifetime.

I don't necessarily think of the Delta Gold card as an everyday spending card. I think of it as a Delta benefits card—one that can potentially save an individual, a couple, or a family significantly more than its annual fee simply by using benefits that fit travel they were already planning. An important part of my philosophy with points and perks: don't spend more to use a benefit. Use benefits to get more from the money you're already spending.

How the card earns SkyMiles

  • 2X miles on eligible Delta purchases
  • 2X miles at restaurants worldwide
  • 2X miles at U.S. supermarkets
  • 1X miles on other eligible purchases

Free Checked Bags Can Be a BIG Deal

This may be one of the easiest ways to justify the annual fee. Card Members receive their first checked bag free on eligible Delta flights, and the benefit can extend to up to eight additional passengers traveling on the same reservation.

Real Life Example: For a family of four, the savings on the first checked bag alone can potentially be around $360 on one round-trip Delta vacation ($45 per flight per person). One trip could more than cover the $150 annual fee.

New for 2026: Delta and American Express also recently added a second free checked bag on domestic Delta-operated flights for the Basic Card Member.

TakeOff 15: Make Your SkyMiles Go Further

This is one of my favorite benefits. With TakeOff 15, Delta Gold Card Members unlock 15% off the miles needed for eligible Delta-operated Award Travel booked through Delta.

Real-life Example: If an eligible flight normally costs 50,000 SkyMiles, TakeOff 15 would reduce it to 42,500 SkyMiles. You're not earning more miles—you are making the miles you've already earned go further. And that's exactly what I want my points and perks to do.

Up to $100 Delta Stays Credit

Card Members can receive up to $100 back per calendar year on eligible prepaid hotel or vacation-rental bookings made through Delta Stays. If you're already planning a hotel stay, this can be another easy way to offset a large portion of the card's annual fee.

Just compare prices before booking. A $100 credit isn't a savings if you're paying significantly more for the hotel just to use it.

Up to $120 in Rideshare Credits

After your first card renewal, the Delta Gold can provide up to $10 per month in statement credits on eligible U.S. rideshare purchases with select providers after enrollment. That's up to $120 per year. This one is important to track because it's monthly. If you don't use the month's credit, it doesn't roll over.

Spend $10,000 → Earn a $200 Delta Flight Credit

Spend $10,000 in eligible purchases during a calendar year, and you can earn a $200 Delta Flight Credit toward future Delta travel. I wouldn't spend $10,000 just to earn a $200 credit. But if your normal household spending gets you close to the threshold anyway, it could make sense to finish it. The card should fit your spending—not create your spending.

More Delta Travel Perks

There are several smaller benefits that make the overall travel experience a little easier too:

  • Zone 5 Priority Boarding gives you earlier access to the plane and potentially better overhead-bin availability.
  • You'll also receive 20% back on eligible in-flight food and beverage purchases on Delta-operated flights.
  • And the card has no foreign transaction fees, which is useful when traveling internationally.

None of these alone would convince me to get the card. Combined with free checked bags, TakeOff 15 and the other credits, however, they add to the overall value.

My Strategy: Pair It With the Regular Amex Gold

This is where I think the Delta Gold gets particularly interesting. Pairing your Delta Gold card with a strong earning card, like the American Express Gold card, can accelerate your earning potential.

Real Life Example: The regular American Express Gold Card earns Membership Rewards points and has strong everyday earning categories in dining and supermarkets specifically (x4). The Delta Gold earns SkyMiles but also unlocks those valuable Delta-specific benefits, specifically the "TakeOff 15". While the American Express Gold card does the heavy lifting of earning faster, the Delta Gold saves you 15% of those points. Transfer your Member Reward points to your Delta SkyMiles account and fly faster on your next trip!

So rather than expecting one card to do everything, use your stronger earning card where it makes sense. Keep the Delta Gold for the Delta perks and TakeOff 15 benefit. That's a much more intentional way to build a credit card strategy.

So, Is the Delta Gold Worth $150 a Year?

For someone who regularly flies Delta, especially a couple or family that checks bags, I think the math can become pretty simple. You don't have to use every benefit for the card to make sense. Instead, ask yourself: Which of these would I already use?

If the value of those benefits comfortably exceeds your annual fee, you've got your answer. If you rarely fly Delta, don't check bags and don't redeem SkyMiles, there are probably better cards for you.

Don't Forget to Actually Use Your Benefits

Having credit card perks and remembering to use them are two completely different things. Some benefits happen automatically. Others require enrollment. Some reset monthly, while others reset annually.

That's exactly why I created my Delta SkyMiles Gold Credits & Benefits Tracker.

It puts the major benefits on one page so you can keep track of your rideshare credits, Delta Stays credit, $10,000 spending goal, checked-bag perks, TakeOff 15, and other benefits without constantly trying to remember what's left.

Because the goal isn't to collect credit card benefits. The goal is to use them.

The Bottom Line

I like the Delta Gold because it's relatively straightforward: if you already fly Delta, the card can make the travel you're already doing less expensive and a little easier. You don't need to chase every perk. You don't need to manufacture spending. And you certainly don't need a wallet full of expensive credit cards to travel well. Use the cards that fit your life, earn intentionally, and take advantage of the benefits you're already paying for.
